Jeff - The Mumbai was fuller than I've remembered it being, and as per last time it was brighter than it used to be. The waiters are friendly and affable, and Griff and I had a good chat with the manager at the end about how the City and his clientele are changing. Draft cobra was tasty. One gripe is that my main dish advertised as Lamb Korahi sizzling did not come sizzling, it came in a bowl like other curries. However, it was tasty and a decent size. My Chicken Nazakat starter had a delicate flavour and I probably would not order it again. Brian and I shared an Aloo Gobi which made a nice change, but the mushrooms were rather cold. I like it here and would be happy to see it stay in the top 6.
Brian - Chicken Nazakat starter was nicely cooked but a bit bland. Hariyali Machli main (tilapia fillets with green chillies and other spices) was delightful. Sides all to a good standard, draft cobra, what could possibly wreck such an evening? Don't get me started…
Mark - The last meal out I had was in Phuket where my curry & rice with a beer cost under a fiver - what a shock to the system this was. The Bell was bad enough before the bullseye for a curry - as a pensioner I'm glad the triplelock is still in place. Mumbai Sq was reasonably populated so had some rizz and we were served reasonably quickly. Chicken Nazakat starter was a good size and garlicy but lacked a bit of punch. Main of Lamb Sag was tasty enough although the rice was a bit blah. Table was laid out 5/4 and I was near the end without the political discussion so overall I enjoyed the outing despite the inflation.
Tony - Service helpful and delivered and swept up well. Missed out on bonus points, as no free brandy or shot. Young bloke at end of night, said he would have given a free drink if we wanted after turned down drink request. Was not convinced of sincerity. A few other diners, missed the rowdy tables of other establishments. Fake trees a nice try, but a bit over the top, with a real trunk and fake branches. Good size Tandoori Chicken but had better Butter Chicken elsewhere, was a rather bland sauce. Expensive overall, for what I can see is an attractive more up market kind of place.
Neil - We met at probably the noisiest pub in the UK, The Bell, but it did have the advantage of being just across the road from the curry house. So, saving my ear drums and avoiding wolfing down a last pint, I got to the restaurant a few minutes early. The staff were exceptionally friendly and allowed me to choose where I wanted the table for 9 to be assembled as there was lots of room. Food was mostly excellent, just let down by a small starter as was not quite the quarter tikka chicken advertised. Main was a very tasty and generous chicken biryani and even the poppadoms and sauces were great. Rounded off with a good chat with our guest Tony it was superb curry night.
Graeme - After a good chat and drink in The Bell (which was very 'cosy', i.e. busy), we walked across the road to the Mumbai Square. As always, this large restaurant was nowhere near full, although there were more customers than on previous visits, and the (new?) fake trees added a little to the ambience. My food was excellent. I had the Mumbai Square Special Mix to start (all the components were very well cooked) and the Chicken Tikka Sizzling Korai for main. I think the service was reasonably efficient, although not particularly friendly, and no free liqueur at the end. The price was high at £50p/h, higher than what has become the new norm (£40-£45p/h). It was good to see Tall Tony again after 11 years (I looked it up) and I was impressed to learn that he is still running a 30 year old Rover 827 (not too many of those on the road now).
Dave - Excellent curry at Mumbai Square. King (that's all they had!) Prawn Puri was superb and the chicken curry v. good. Bit more ambience than usual although not packed. Definitely expect this to make top 6 .
Jon - Apart from the mystery conflab at the end, it was another good evening. Mumbai Square is a bit on the pricey end but the food is good and draft Cobra for the second month in a row was a nice treat. My mixed starter was very good and my King Prawn Shaslik was ok but maybe not as flavoursome as some I have tried before. Accompaniments were all good.
Richard - An attractive and spacious place, Mumbai Sq, with attentive service. Good food too. I had lamb chops to start, which were nice but not outstanding, but the main dishes were very high quality: chicken bhuna, plain rice (shared), garlic naan, plus assorted sides. It was great to have Tony along after a surprising absence of 11 years.
