Jon - A rare trip to the West End in the sunshine, although we were always in the shadow of Freemasons Hall, secret handshakes abound! The pub was pleasant, if somewhat pricey, and the restaurant put on a good show. I had lamb tikka to start, which was very nicely cooked if not massively flavoured, and after much deliberation over the extensive menu I went to my favourite lamb dansak for main, and was not disappointed. Good chat as usual, and I'm sure we'll all be interested to hear how Aneta's search for an English husband goes over the next few months.
Mark - Bhatti is a place I have passed often and thought about suggesting at some stage but now glad I did not. Nothing special IMHO with a Fish kebab starter that turned out to be fishcakes, Lamb Sag main that was OK but needed more meat while the rice was lumpy and not good enough. I enjoyed the Nan. Slight confusion over Tastecard but don't expect a group with over 200 years combined experience of working for city financial institutions to work out the best deal without a full project analysisl! Didn't realise Dom had arranged a fancy dress evening. Glad I was not sitting opposite him & Neil as my eyes would have watered with the clash of checks. Good to go up West but there must be better options available - at least we got out an hour earlier than the Ladies had from their outing.
Richard - Well done Dom for finding a very good place in the heart of the curry-sparse West End. The Aussie wine-swiller was even kind enough to find a proper pub serving ice-cold lager to assemble the crew, and to top it off he arranged some Aussie sunshine! I really liked this place. It was unpretentious - regular favourites on the menu, nice ambience, low pricing for the locale, discreet waiters. All the dishes were good. The lamb tikka starter was large and very tender, the chicken korai was very tasty. We even got to stop by the Coal Hole for a chaser on the way back. I am hoping for a speedy revisit.
Graeme - Considering this is in a smart part of London, it is quite a plain and old-fashioned restaurant, although there's nothing wrong with that. We were seated in an overflow roon at the back which was a bit dull but, other than that, everything else was pretty good. I enjoyed my Prawn Poori (often spelt "Puree") starter and Chicken Pathia main. The service was low key but very effective and efficient - we were out of there in record time and I was home well before 11pm (the wife seemed a bit flustered and I wondered why the back door was open at that time of night). It was a good evening in a new part of town for us (thank you for that, Dom) ... and the Freemasons Hall across the road was unbelievably impressive.
Neil - Meeting in the West End was a really nice change, the high cost of the beer was more than made up for by the great weather and a different mix than our normal City crowd. Only downer was that Griff got some abuse from a local scrounger for not looking directly at him when he said no(!). The restaurant was like all the West End ones we seem to visit, very efficient, average-to-good food but always small portions. The price on this occasion though not too bad. I'd avoid mushroom sides as straight from a tin with some spices sprinkled on top, also the cheese nan not very cheesy. It may not receive a revisit but a great diversion from our normal curry house selections, well done Dom for coordinating.
Dominic - With Summer in full swing I assumed the CC role and decided that a visit to the West End to mingle with tourists and theatre "luvvies" alike would be an interesting outing. And given the speed of the meal it would appear that The Bhatti certainly caters for the pre-theatre crowd! The restaurant has a nice modern feel and we were seated at the far end in a comfortable area. My starter of the Lamb Chops was a tad disappointing being quite small, somewhat chewy and with an uninspiring flavour. My main of the Chicken Jalfrezi was a slight improvement but nothing that caught the imagination. The rest was just ok with the wine being the most memorable item of the night. Service has been marked down as I was less than impressed with the change to our discount which actually increased the bill! Good to see the lovely Aneta once more and more importantly Alex's sandals - just like Capistrano's swallows, the sure sign of Summer!!! All in all an enjoyable night but not an inspiring one meal-wise.
Tim - We were in a different part of London from usual, meeting at the rather expensive Prince of Wales. It was nice to see some different architecture; Bhatti restaurant was in the shadow of the Freemason's Hall. The decor in the restaurant was quite plain, and a little tatty in places, but the table wasn't as cramped as some of the places on Brick Lane. There were only 3 accompaniments to the poppadoms, and the raita was rather tasteless and the mango chutney tasted of onion. Prawn puri starter had too much pastry, which was a bit chewy. The sauce was tasty, but rather too salty. Lamb sag main was pleasant with tender meat. Rice portion was quite small. Cheese nan didn't have much cheese in it, and the peshwari nan was really sweet, as though it had been filled with sugar syrup. Veg dishes weren't too bad. Service was efficient.
Dave - Bad start to the evening - paying £5.25 for a pint of cooking lager and then being verbally abused by passing beggar outside whilst drinking it. However the restaurant was not bad serving a good griffo set meal at a reasonable price for west end. Wouldn't be disappointed to go back there but would definitely meet in a different pub.
