Dave - My first visit of the year! hope I can squeeze two more in before the end of the year as I don't want to be known as a **ry member. Was great to catch up with everyone - both in the very cosy booth we crammed into in the pub beforehand and in the dimly lit restaurant where I think a new record was set for the number of phone torches deployed. Unfortunately the food didn't match the company imo - the spicy pops were ok but the puri that the prawn puri came in was a bit of a strange texture. The nan bread was very doughy and lukewarm and I was sorely disappointed with the chicken shaslik which I expected to be a sizzler but there wasn't a sizzle in sight. Beer was fine - but only cos I like kingfisher - the price tag of over £50 (not so rare nowadays) sealed my disappointment. Not top six by a long way.
Brian - Spinach and cottage cheese pastry rolls for starter was different, and not unpleasant. Main of Station Curry was a really tasty, on the bone, lamb curry, which I didn't quite finish. Potatoes were among the best I've had. There was something about the place that didn't seem quite right, but I've no idea what it was. Hope to go back and discover I'm wrong.
Graeme - My memory of this visit is somewhat vague as I ended up in A&E after badly damaging my shoulder by tripping up at the station on the way home. However, I do remember that it was an interesting place and I had made a mental note to mark my starter (King Prawn Puri) as 9 and main (???) as 8. It was expensive but, I felt, the location and the quality of the food meant it still gave reasonable vfm.
Mark - A trip to the West End (Oops, sorry Graeme!) had me mixing with the cast of the Lion King as they headed to the stage after the interval as this new venue is located in the corner of the Lyceum and seemed to have a raked floor as if we were in the stalls. The lighting seemed to have been dimmed for the show and the layout was unusual but service was efficient and food certainly plentiful. Bang bang to start and Rogan for main were both tasty but I've had better rice. Hefty bill but in line with everything else around this area. BTW - some strange blond bloke joined us in the pub and followed us to the meal. Anyone know him? Maybe somewhere to return?
Jon - An interesting evening that turned out to be a bit too exciting for one of our number, albeit we didn't hear about that until a few days later. A restaurant in the heart of the West End, so much so that it shared a building, and toilets, with the Lyceum Theatre leading to El Pres almost getting swept up on stage for the second half. The food was pretty good and plentiful – we could have easily shared main courses despite being unusually low on the veg orders. Tiger Prawns and the Tandoori Grill were my choices, both pretty good. I'd happily go back.
Dominic - A new venue this month although a return to a familiar part of London for the group. Having gone straight to the eatery, I was the first to be seated in a modern, lively setting with the only criticism being subdued lighting which brought out all the phone-flashlights so as to be able to read the menu! Service was pretty good all evening despite a full house. For starters I chose the Dum Dum Duck Masala being charred pieces of duck cutlet which was quite good albeit a tad chewy. For main I selected the Daadee's Chicken Naga which was pleasant but not very fiery. However, portions were quite good across all dishes which seemed to stop a number of members! Nothing stood out with the rest with the VFM being accepted as what is the price for a London curry night out rather than feeling one got a good deal. But another very enjoyable evening of good banter only clouded by one member's calamitous post-curry accident which necessitated a visit to A&E … speedy recovery G!
Jeff - Hakuna Matata! Paro is part of the Lyceum theatre carved out to form a curry house, but with the multitude of plastic plants it reminded me more of Planet Hollywood at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Service was initially a bit slow, but cheerful enough and all food came up fresh, and in large quantities: for example, a decent King Prawn Puri was in a bowl rather than a flat plate. My Railway Curry main was enormous, and I was unable to finish it. Limited choice of beer. The main problem was that we were sat in such a dark spot that we all needed our phone torches to read the menu, and I had literally no idea what I was eating, especially in the veggie bowls. Other customers were sat in good light. Anyway, I enjoyed it, and would like to come back another time.
