Jeff - Nice to go to a different part of London and meet up in the Old Bank of England. The smart-ish restaurant was hidden away but had a reasonable amount of customers. Service was quite efficient but not really engaging. There was a solid choice of beers. My paneer starter (actually a small main dish) was excellent, and my main course of lamb shashlik was pretty good and big enough for two. Vegetables were good and nan nice and fresh. Expensive, but the tastecard discount made it acceptable.
Richard - It's nice to have a decent place to go towards the West End to keep our coverage of the full central area, and pricing was fine for the area after the Taste card discount. The starters were a touch expensive (although my mixed starter was a large selection of large pieces so justified), but the mains were reasonably priced - my Chicken Bhuna was £10 before any discount. The food was good all round but not exceptional. The restaurant was modern and reasonably spacious for one of Dom's selections, with discreet but reactive service. The Old Bank of England was a great pub to meet in beforehand. I'd be happy to revisit but it may not make top 10.
Dave - Pleasant evening at the India India - curious Cornish pasty shaped prawn puri was tasty and excellent chicken curry followed. Very good naan bread.
Mark - Good meeting pub (although perhaps having renaged on City work I can't understand why poorly served pints are a fiver apiece) that even had a beer garden, I was told by Dom, who escorted our guest with the longest hair outside. India India was a place we have visited previously as Fleet St Tandoori and the layout had not changed much based on my loose memory. Overall it seemed OK but my starter of the Tandoori mix was very disappointing. Both the prawn & salmon were over cooked with the fish being dry and chewy. The meat items were better but taste spoilt by the two terrible selections. Main of Lamb Khori was tasty but the sauce could have been thicker. I dodged the regular footie quiz (is this now more of a fixture than Griff singing?) and skipped off early with thoughts of Sam Fox & Linda Lusardi!
Neil - A great meeting pub (The Old Bank of England), quiet atmosphere and heritage décor. Not too much of a walk to the curry house which had friendly staff and reasonable service. A real pity about the food though, which although very fresh was more than short on taste and portion size. Didn't stop us having a good time but would avoid in future due to poor vfm.
Graeme - I quite liked this place. There was nothing particularly remarkable about it but it had a nice ambience and the service was good (efficient rather than friendly). My starter, Kebab Anwari, was a little dry and uninteresting - maybe I made the wrong menu-choice. For main, I went for Xacutie Chicken which was really quite nice! The sundries were all OK. All-in-all, an enjoyable meal in good company. The presence of Dom's guest, Colleen, seemed to stir something in Griff who decided (for the first time in our 220-odd outings) to use this opportunity to conduct a mini-survey on which Page 3 girl we liked most. Please! Earlier, there had been some schoolboy giggling as the "fingering" (our system used to order whole or part portions of poppadoms, rice and bread) was explained. Talk about living down to the stereotype!
Dominic - After performing extensive research that yielded tonight's "new" eatery, I decided at the last minute to double check whether the club had visited this venue before ... good thing too that we have this website to call upon (plug for Graeme here!) for it had been visited back in 2004 under a different name! But time and many beers at the impressive Old Bank of England boozer beforehand meant nobody would remember! Upon arrival, we descended the stairs to a modern and welcoming large room, although our table hadn't been set out despite two or three calls to confirm our party. Service was nevertheless largely good for the evening and the place filled up soon after we arrived making it more comfortable. I shared a Mixed Starter with Richard consisting of Vegetable Samosa, Paneer Tikka, Onion Bhajee, Sheek Kebab and Chicken Tikka that was very well presented although mostly a tad dry - I should have asked that the condiment tray be left. For main I chose a Xacutie Lamb which was supposed to be hot. Unfortunately, it was rather runny and lacked that expected punch. The rest was fine with a decent Stuffed Paratha and a well priced Pinotage being the standouts. Once the "riff-raft" element of our table had left (yes, you know who you are!), we were treated to a free round of liqueurs which was a nice touch. Overall, I thought it was a very decent VFM evening especially given it was only £3 more per head some 15 years later! Great banter as usual although Jon decided to bring out his most taxing football quiz on a night when we all tried to limit our swearing. Fantastic to see my lovely, close friend Colleen come along and be made very welcome by all and sundry including young William, although many members were scratching their heads as to Colleen and my relationship!! But then again, that was the point!!
Jon - There was nothing really wrong with India India apart from what seems to be a trend of bringing up my special rice right at the very end, but there was nothing really to write home about either. Nothing on the specialities menu took my fancy so I opted for my "goto" lamb dhansak which was OK, although the sauce was thicker that I normally like. Tandoori mixed starter was good, veg all good, but given that we were on a good Tastecard discount, it was quite expensive and they quibbled about the free liqueurs until half of us had left! As usual the best thing about the evening was the company - nice to have a feminine element to that for a change. Also, I did like the pub beforehand – The Old Bank of England – I'll definitely visit there again, I can take or leave the restaurant.
Colleen - I thought the restaurant looked nice and was quite spacious compared to other Indian restaurants I have dined at. I had the poppadoms and chutney to start which was good followed by king prawn purée as my starter and lamb biryani as my main. Unfortunately, both dishes lacked flavour and the biryani was a little dry. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meals more so maybe I just chose the wrong dishes from the menu. In saying that I still managed to eat the lot! The red wine was lovely and smooth, I really enjoyed it, bonus that it was a South African pinotage and quite affordable. Service was not overwhelmingly friendly but reasonably efficient since there were 12 of us. I thought it was good value with a tastecard discount. All in all I had a great evening and everyone was so welcoming and made the night so much fun!!
Tim - The main part of the restaurant is below ground, but as the room is large and the tables well-spaced, there is no sense of claustrophobia. The Chang beer was a bit bland, but it was nice to see something different alongside the more usual Cobra and Kingfisher. The spicy poppadom was a little soft in places and the raita and mango chutney a bit sweet. The tandoori platter starter was mostly fine, but the salmon was extremely dry and over-cooked; it's texture more like biltong than fish. The dum gosht main was ok, but it was not as spicy as I was expecting from the description and there was rather more sauce than meat. After a bit of a slow start, the service was fine, and I was impressed that for at least some of the dishes they delivered them directly to the person who had ordered them. The overall VFM was not too bad, though that was helped by having a Tastecard discount.
Brian - Excellent evening as usual. Only disappointment was the fish main, which appeared to be talapia in a sauce comprising just a tin of tomatoes.
