Jon - It may be at the location of the once great Matab's but it does not come close to living up to it.  We arrived at an empty restaurant (the only other guests for the whole time we were there were a couple of blokes who turned up a short time later) and were placed on a phallus-shaped arrangement of tables giving rise to a certain level of hilarity.  Despite the lack of other diners, the service was frankly dreadfully slow.  The popadoms turned up un-ordered and without any spicy.  There obviously weren't enough so having eventually managed to order "a couple more", two more baskets of popadoms arrived.  The extra popadoms did turn out to be welcome given the size of the kebab platter starter – less a platter than a smattering, but it tasted OK I guess.  The main chicken karahi was fine, but the special rice (extra-menu) was anything but, and the veg dishes were disappointingly small.  Decent keema nan though.  The quality of the service was finished off with hot towels that, like many things it seems, failed to live up to their name – even luke warm was pushing it.  The VFM was only so "high" because of the 50% discount through toptable.com.  Unfortunately, this restaurant seems to have taken the worst of Brick Lane and, at its menu prices, combined it with the cost of a City establishment.  Less than impressive.  Good night though!

Graeme - This was the poorest meal I have had with CurryMarks for a long time. Nearly everything was disappointing. The service was 'cold', inaccurate at times and very slow (and we were the only customers in the place for most of the time). There was no atmosphere, no 'life' to the place. They didn't have Cobra, only bottled Kingfisher. My Kebab Platter starter was unbelievably small and would have been a real rip-off at the full (undiscounted) price of £6.95. The Pilau Rice lacked flavour. The veg. dishes were minute. The only positive (non-negative) aspects were the Peshwari Nan (decent) and my Chicken Jalfrazi [sic] main (unexciting). The overall experience was only saved by the Top Table 50% food discount without which things may have turned ugly when the bill arrived.

Jeff - What a strange place.  Totally lacking in ambience or other customers, one choice of beer, comedy service, the first female waiter I can recall in an Indian restaurant for a long time (if not ever), but when the food finally did arrive it was pretty good.  Just that everything else was so poor.  Thank goodness for the top table discount taking the bill down by £100 for the party.

John - Another average restaurant. Half-decent Chicken bhuna but the rest was unremarkable.

Brian - Seated at a phallic table, with lights going randomly bright and dim, has led to a fairly low ambience score.  Food was fairly average in my opinion, certainly not particularly memorable.

Neil - Quite a boozy evening, serve me right for turning up at the pub early but I believe I can just about remember it (yes, I remember). Very slow, if attentive, service. This was somewhat surprising since we were the only people there for most of the evening. Overall, I felt the food had gone downhill since the previous 'Matabs' incarnation but there again it was ranked number one for a while, so a lot to live up to. A big positive was that the food was very spicy, certainly hotter than comparative dishes in other establishments but not too hot.  On the negative side, my plain rice was over cooked and the cheese nan didn't have very much cheese in it.

Mark - Taste of India is in Aldgate High St where one of our old favourites used to be and suffers from the same location problem of not being Brick Lane nor the City. The evening we went it was empty so you would hope for fast service but I guess they only had the one chef so preparing 10 meals took a while. Onion bahji starter good and Meat Thali v good apart form the wierd veg dish that was spinach apparently. Enjoyable evening, started in a good old boozer, The Bell.

Tim - On arrival the restaurant was empty, and apart from us, remained so for quite a while. The decor is clean, if somewhat plain. Poppadoms were brought out promptly, but there was quite a wait for starters. The beer selection was adequate; they had Kingfisher but no Cobra. Starter of chicken chat was good; it came with a rich, tangy and spicy sauce. The main course of sag gosht was a decent size and had a good flavour, but some of the meat was a bit tough. The cheese nan didn't taste much of cheese, and indeed seemed slightly sweet, while the peshwari nan didn't seem to have a lot of filling. Neil, in a break from curry club etiquette, tried to confuse the waiter by ordering rice separately. Apart from that, and waiting for the food, the service was otherwise mostly efficient, although for some reason they tried to give Brian a couple of random main course dishes he hadn't ordered. Food prices on the menu look quite expensive, but with the Toptable discount the overall cost was quite reasonable.

Robin - The service was fairly slow although pleasant enough. I had the mixed tandoori platter to start and it was pretty good although quite small. My main course of lamb madras was very average; nice sauce but the meat was undercooked and a bit chewy. The off-menu special rice had lots of the right stuff in it, but had somehow been rendered pretty tasteless, and the other veg dishes were nice but a bit greasy. Although the meal was very cheap by current standards I didn't think the VFM was all that great. Chicken main course next time – if there is one?

Alex - Rather good apart from the 'drab' colours of some of dishes. Great value.
