Mark - Forty Quid? FORRR-TYYY QUID!!! I know we were in Tourist land but this was far too pricey for what was served. Lovely designs with the sauces to start so perhaps there is a artisic charge that we missed. Lamb samosa good but 3 small pieces reminded me of a Sainsbury party pack. Main of Goan fish was most enjoyable and there was enough rice to solve the famine in Africa. Stairs and toilet area a bit shabby for a place with pretensions and service a bit slow re taking our order. Pleasent enough overall but not worth that cost. Not sure about our 2 pub pre-meal drinks or Dom's rugby tackle. Good to see Graeme back but he needs to work on his ordering routine and Neil needs to escape his time warp. I'm still not sure what this decade is called but I know the turn of the Century.
Alex - Generally good, my starter was spicier than usual which was nice, main was tasty. Enjoyable meal. A bit expensive but not drastic.
Richard - After a few relaxing pints in the pub next door while sitting in the sun, ambling round the corner to a nice looking restaurant, decent selection of beer, good poppadums, friendly service and nice interior was a very good start. The spicy whitebait and main of fish tilapia curry (can't remember the exact name) were rather good, although peshwari nan was a little too sweet (again). I like the Sitar: great location, and food is not dumbed-down for tourists, but prices were excessive: I still can't see how it got to £40 per head (although excessive ordering of veg does not help). Diggers was relishing his new role as jobsworth (his words), so heaven help us if he was to become Curry President.
Robin - I had the Sitar's equivalent of king prawn puri to start (dosai ki chingri), which was pleasant enough but didn't contain very much prawn. Then I stuck to the plan I decided after last year's visit and had chicken balti with two keema nans and no rice. The balti was good and there was plenty of it. The keema nans were very good, but not quite as good as last time; I think one and a half would have been enough but I ate the lot anyway. The veg dishes were not bad but nothing exceptional. However the price was horrendous! I'd have been reasonably happy to pay £30, but £40 was just way too much for what I had despite the round of free liqueurs. Hope it doesn't remain in the top six!
Tim - Tikka Gold beer - I hadn't seen this one before. In the event, it was a bit fizzy, and I wasn't sure about the taste, but it was nice to see something different. The wine (St Emilion) was very smooth, though quite expensive. There were only 3 accompaniments for the poppadoms - it seems like quite a few places these days have stopped doing lime pickle. The chicken tikka starter was good; 3 large chunks of well-marinaded meat, a reasonable salad, and a multi-colour sauce explosion. Main of Gosht a la Nilgiri was not bad either. Veg side dishes were fine, though rather expensive at an average of £5 each. Keema nan was good. The portion sizes were quite large; there was some food left over, and Dom negotiated a free round of liqueurs, but the overall cost still felt a bit high. Service was mostly OK, but seemed a little slow at times, e.g. waiting for starters, and I had to ask twice for water.
Graeme - Apparently there was no beer in the Wellington so I joined Jon's break-away party in the nearby Lyceum Tavern. This being my first curry night since my 'cardiac incident', I felt I had to share my recently learned knowledge about all things heart-related - however, I must be careful as I am even starting to bore myself! Anyway, onto the curry ... as before, the food was pretty good but the service needs improvement and the price was too high. I had the Spicy White Bait to start (tasty but maybe could have a bit larger) and Chicken a la Nilgiri for main (very nice). The service was polite and 'accurate' but so slow - if we hadn't prompted them, they would never have taken our order. In addition to Cobra and Kingfisher, they had an unusual Indian bottled beer (Tikka Gold?) which we all tried, but I preferred the Cobra. Even allowing for the West End location, the £40+ price was way too much and took the edge off the evening for me. It was good to be back though!
Neil - Due to a pump failure the evening started with us being split into two groups, ye olde worlde real ale drinkers and the lager louts. Thanks to Dom's Galaxy thingy, the latter group started a new game 'guess from the previous comment the location and curry eater', this wasn't that hard in hindsight, we're quite predictable. Curry house had some very reasonable dishes, with bigger portions than the last visit, and the service friendly and timely with only a small delay getting the orders in. Great to see The Legend back directing the rice portions, much more efficient. About a tenner too expensive but one of my fave nights, thanks to an early start, (thanks Richard) sun, lager, tourists, and The Legend's return. Roll on the next 50 visits.
Dominic - All in all a somewhat disappointing revisit for me. Although we seemed to order quite late we were still waiting for starters at 8.45 despite the fact that the restaurant appeared half full. My Prawn dish of Dosai Ki Chingri arrived lukewarm at best while my main of King Prawn Saag was fine without being anything special. The sides were also OK without being extraordinary while the wine was good but a tad expensive. A very lumpy price for what we had so I fear the worst for this current top 6 eatery. The highlight of the evening had to be Graeme's triumphant return and order being once again restored to the selection process!!!
Jon - A pretty good meal from the Sitar, but the lumpy price tag was certainly not justified, especially given the significant whip residual thanks to at least some of the group having visited the Sam Smith's pub around the corner. The special rice was average but everything else pretty good, especially my venture into the unusual with a swordfish dish for main course. It was great to see Graeme back where he belongs – drinking beer and eating curry!
