Neil - Arrived at our new local, The Pride of Spitalfields, rather early and only had the pub cat for company for half an hour but things soon got going after Jon and Aneta arrived. Lots of good conversation about FA cup ties, Jeff's hundredth appearance, and building projects! As to The Shampan, it's not closed as previously believed (!) and also still has that student charm if not the old student prices. Not much to grumble about apart from the 'highly recommended' Aloo Chop starter which was a microwaved potato cake. Not highly recommended I'd say. Beer also a bit limited in choice and sides a tad small. Still a nice curry house to take your friends to, if not the great value of previous years.
Alex - Nice to be in Shampan again, except for having the mid-point of a cold to distract me… Think they are keeping it up despite some questions over the veracity of the draft beers.
John - A good showing by Shampan. Sheek Kebab followed by Chicken Tikka Shashlick Massala washed down by a couple of bottles of Kingfisher. Given that Griff rates the Moonlight as a 7, I'm expecting him to give this a mark in the high 20s.
Jon - While it was a good night as always, I was disappointed with the food at the Shampan. The mixed kebab starter was quite small, the chicken and lamb tikka were somewhat lacking in flavour, and I've never liked the school dinner metal trays that they serve starters on. My lamb dansak main course was just uninspiring, a little insipid in terms of colour and without any real kick. The vegetable dishes were tasty but very small and I remain wary of the draught Cobra as to whether it is what it purports to be. The nan was good though. Also, for Brick Lane, it was expensive.
Jeff - This was my 100th currymarks visit - big thanks to el Presidente for the inscribed Cobra glass and to all members for putting up with me and for friendships made and cemented. Following on from the Pride of Spitalfields, a fine pub, came my 6th visit to the Shampan. It's not bad, but I'm still not quite sure why it's top 6. Portions of vegetables and rice are always small and this time the rice was cold to boot. However,my King Prawn Puree was fresh and tasty, and my lamb main special was excellent and exactly as billed. Beer was not great either. Still a reliable choice on Brick Lane though, where as we learnt last month the quality varies wildly.
Mark - An unusually empty Shampan meant our table was ready and waiting without delay - perhaps others thought it was closed due to the poor website? Choice of draught or bottled led to comparison of what was served and there was certainly a difference. Been a few years since I was here, missed the last 2, so it was good to have a 5th option to prepare my pop art (gettit?). Prawn puri starter plentiful and just enough bite. Main of Lamb sag certainly had more meat that many other places but lacked flavour I thought while the boiled rice was too dry for my liking. Congats to Jeff on his century with very good strike rate, there may be a couple more this year. Currymarks WhatsApp group now live - may give another method for abuse - also allowed Griff to order from the loo!
Graeme - It was a strangely quiet night in the Shampan, one of my favourite restaurants. It looked a bit different in there but I don't think it had had a make-over as such - it certainly wasn't any smarter! Mind you, it's lived-in look is part of the charm for me. It was another good overall performance and having 2(?) Indian beers on draft continues to impress. I don't know what I had to start as my original starter (Sheek Kebab) was removed when I went to the toilet - I'd only had one mouthful! The replacement was a chicken dish which was quite nice but that's all. I decided to eat it without complaint as a. I was aware there had been some confusion over the orders for starters and, b. I was starving and didn't want to have to wait for something else to be cooked. For main, I (again) had Sylheti Jalfrezi Chicken - delicious! Congratulations to Jeff on reaching his century.
Richard - The service and price were good, the food and atmosphere were fine. I was disappointed by the draft Cobra which tasted very watery (speaking as someone who had just been drinking Fosters). When I switched, the bottled Kingfisher was good. The "mixed cocktail" (grill) starter and bread was rather average, but chicken bhuna main and veg were good.
Dave - Solid performance from the Shampan ... contrary to rumours that they no longer sell beer, a full set of draught and bottled options was made available. The traditional chicken curry was spot on and the nan bread was hot and crispy. Congratulations to curry Jeff on his 100. Think Shampan should stay top six.
Dominic - This was the quietest I've ever seen the Shampan and the first time it wasn't filled with "girlies" ... lucky we brought one of our own! Despite it not being overly busy our table provided good atmosphere in an enjoyable setting. My starter of the mixed kebab was tasty with all decent pieces. My "off-menu" main of the Garlic Chilli Chicken was very nice indeed with just the right amount of kick. The rest was all ok with the wine being the standout - taste and price! A free round of liqueurs was also a nice touch from what was very good service overall. Very enjoyable banter throughout the evening and congrats once again to Jeff for reaching his 100 mark - well worthy of a "smooch" from Aneta!!
Tim - The touts were out in force tonight; I suppose it's partly because January is a quiet month; the Shampan was emptier than I remember having ever seen it before. I noticed that they've still not repaired the broken window in the painted frieze - it's been like that for at least three years now. Unlike on previous occasions they actually had both Cobra and Kingfisher available in both bottled and draught, however I found the draught Kingfisher tasted somewhat different (worse, though not unpleasant) from the bottled version. The starter of mixed kebab was served on a cold metal dish with separate compartments, reminiscent of something out of a prison canteen. For some reason, when we'd finished our starters, we had to keep the used knives and forks on the table for the main course - was the dishwasher broken or something? The Chef's special main of lamb Thatul Tanga Bujon was pretty good - tangy sauce and good quality meat. Peshwari nan was nice and all the other accompaniments were fine. Thanks to Dom for arranging a (free?) round of liqueurs - a pleasant way to finish the meal.
Brian - The expected good fare from the Shampan, although I'm concerned that the shrinking rice portions mean I may have to extend a straight rather than a crooked finger next time around.
